Six of One

A fortnight ago, spin off station ‘Cool Old Skool’ launched on DAB, having previously been an online only service. That brings to six the number of stations being broadcast from and through Bauer’s new City Quays HQ. It will be some time before RAJAR* figures for this new arrival become available, and as there’s always a delay between making programme changes and seeing the results in RAJAR, still too early for it to reflect the exodus of presenters from U105.

The latest survey covers the period up to June the 28th, and Cool FM leads on reach and crosses the half million mark with 507,000 weekly listeners, an increase of 38,000 year-on-year. Hours though were down from 4,164,000 to 3,438,000 and share from 14.2 to 11.2.

Downtown marked its 50th birthday with an increase by all measures; 307,000 listeners (were 280,000), 3,103,000 hours (were 2,626,000) and share of 10.1 (was 8.9).
Downtown Country also saw upward movement in reach (151,000 from 138,000), hours (1,760,000 from 1,352,000) and share (5.7 from 4.6).

BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle still attracts the highest number of hours at 3,984,000 (were 4,905,000 a year ago) with a reach of 402,000 (was 416,000) and share of 13.0 (was 16.7).

Q Radio had a slight lift in reach – 320,000 from 318,000, but hours were down to 2,420,000 from 2,697,000 and share 7.9 from 9.1.

U105 in Greater Belfast increased reach to 208,000 (was 183,000), with hours of 1,880,000 (were 1,899,000) and a share of 11.0 (was 9.5). Outside Belfast, reach, hours and share were up – 41,000 (was 24,000), 205,000 hours (were 180,000) and 1.6 (was 1.5).

Lastly, the hybrid stations Greatest Hits Radio NI and Hits Radio NI, showed increases of 14,000 and 6,000 on the year with 68,000 and 31,000 listeners respectively.

Overall, 55% of radio’s total listening hours were achieved by the fully local services.
